Uganda Christian University Win The 2025 UW Privacy Moot Court Competition


On 25th September 2025, the 4th edition of the Unwanted Witness Privacy Moot Court Competition concluded in spectacular fashion with a Grand Finale hosted at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Tanzania.

The competition brought together the brightest legal minds from 𝐔𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚, 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚, 𝐑𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐚𝐧𝐳𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐚 to battle for the prestigious title of Overall Champion at East Africa’s leading Data Protection and Privacy Moot Court.

Guided by the theme “𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐃 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬,” teams argued complex cases touching on biometric data governance, surveillance risks, and the responsibilities of the state in upholding citizens’ dignity in an increasingly digitised era.

Uganda Christian University emerged 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 of the Competition, earning themselves $1500 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 7𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐮𝐦 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 scheduled to take place in Lagos from 26th–28th November 2025.

A Call for Inclusivity, Trust, and Accountability in Reforming Uganda’s National ID System

One of the most striking issues identified in the paper is the financial burden imposed on Ugandans for ID services. The fixed fee of UGX 50,000/- ($13.78 USD) for replacing identification cards is markedly higher compared to neighboring countries like Kenya, Rwanda, and extends even to South Africa and India. In a nation where approximately 30.1% of the population lives below the poverty line, this exorbitant fee exacerbates social inequalities and restricts access to essential services for many Ugandans.
