In a bid to enforce compliance to the Data Protection and Privacy Act 2019 and its regulations, the government of Uganda established a Personal Data Protection Office an independent office under the National Information Technology Authority, Uganda (NITA-U) responsible for overseeing the implementation of and enforcement of the Data Protection and Privacy Act No. 9 of 2019.

But even with the establishment of the office, compliance to the Data Protection and Privacy Act and its regulations is still a challenge to the extent that the inaugural Privacy Scorecard report; a monitoring tool used to provide Ugandans with critical information on how different data collectors/processors comply with the principles and standards of data protection, recorded a very low performance of 35%. To that end, Unwanted Witness, Bare Foot Law, and WOUGNET seek to create awareness of the Data Protection and Privacy Act and its regulation in a bid to improve the rate of compliance.
