Unwanted Witness Launches an Internet Disruption Notification Tool for the Visually Impaired.

Kampala, 30th / 09/ 2021; Unwanted Witness has launched the Network Disruption Audio Notifier (NetDAN) tool for visually impaired persons.

Network disruptions devastate the lives of visually impaired persons who are already struggling with the high costs of digital gadgets such as phones. The use of computer assistive technology has given visually impaired people ever-expanding opportunities for personal and professional growth.

“When network disruptions happen, persons with disabilities especially the visually impaired persons are locked out of the digital space which affects their understanding of what is going on around them” Says Dorothy Mukasa, the Executive Director Unwanted Witness.

Uganda has experienced several network disruptions, the most recent one happening during the 2021 general elections. In scenarios of network disruptions, the blind and the visually impaired are affected mostly because the internet is like a lifeline to them.

NetDAN will provide real-time information about the connection status of various websites that are commonly used in Uganda. The websites include; social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, and Twitter.

“The tool will notify the blind and the visually impaired whether specific websites are on or off, keeping them in the know” Dorothy added.
