Unwanted Witness-Uganda, warmly welcomes her new position as a member of the NGO observer at the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights.
Unwanted Witness Uganda was granted the observer status on Friday 3rd May 2019 during the 64th Ordinary session of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights sitting at Sharm El Sheikh, Arab Republic of Egypt.
“Unwanted Witness is attaining observer status at a critical moment when democracy is sharply shrinking on the continent, freedom of expression at cross road globally and the Internet being muzzled by African authorities through continuous internet blocking and enacting repressive legislations, said Dorothy Mukasa, the acting Executive Officer, the Unwanted Witness-Uganda.
She noted that new status widens the space to further protect and promote human rights in general and Internet Rights in particular for all Ugandans.
Rule 68 of the rules of procedure of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights adopted at its 47 Ordinary Session in Banjul, The Gambia, provides that Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) may be granted observer status with the commission and notes their rights and obligations.
African Commission on Human and People’s rights is the African Union quasi- judicial body for promoting and protecting human right throughout Africa.
Unwanted Witness-Uganda advances a free, open and secure Internet that contributes to the realization of good governance and Human Rights in Uganda.
