Activists sue govt, seek Covid-19 vaccination for all Ugandans

Activists have sued Government, seeking a declaration that the exclusion of Ugandans without National Identification Cards (NIC) from Covid-19 vaccination is unfair and illegal.

In a press release dated March 2, 2021, the health minister, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, stated that Ugandans without national identity cards will be prevented from accessing the Covid-19 vaccination that starts on March 10, 2021.

On Friday, the health ministry received 864,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, shipped via the COVAX facility, the world’s facility for universal access to COVID-19 vaccines.

Initiative for Social Economic Rights (ISER) and Unwanted Witness sued the Attorney General, who is the legal advisor of Government, in the Civil Division of the High Court in Kampala.

“The health ministry’s decision threatens, jeopardises and infringes the fundamental human rights and freedoms of the excluded Ugandans to health and dignity,” Angella Nabwowe Kasule contends.
